- B.Sc.: Vancouver Island University (Fisheries and Aquaculture) 2020
- Dipl.: Sir Sanford Fleming College (Fish and Wildlife) 2014
Darren Bluebird has spent most of his free time and professional experience around water. He completed a Diploma in Fish and Wildlife prior to a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture. He has considerable experience leading a variety of fisheries projects in stock assessment, environmental monitoring, and habitat assessment. Darren’s core work with LGL is focused on Nass River stock assessments where he monitors all five Pacific salmon species using various methods including fish ladder, fishwheels, stream walks, and aerial helicopter surveys. Since 2021, he and affiliated partners have led the Meziadin Fishway in evaluating the Nass River’s largest Sockeye Salmon population. Outside of the Nass, his most recent work has been focused on planning, operating, and analyzing underwater video data such as Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS), hydro-acoustics, and side-scan sonar to quantify fish abundance, species composition, and size distribution for ongoing stock assessment. He has also used side scan sonar and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for the purpose of identifying and quantifying aquatic benthic habitat to identifying potential Sockeye Salmon lake spawning. Furthermore, he has experience conducting water quality projects on lakes and rivers to identify contaminants and/or measuring productivity. Besides salmon, he also has experience in estimating bivalve and Dungeness Crab populations along the Northwest Coast of B.C. He is a Biologist In Training (BIT) with the B.C. College of Applied Biologists.
