Candice Way developed her passion for the outdoors and environment growing up in central Newfoundland. An early summer employment opportunity in Terra Nova National Park sparked her interest in the marine environment. This coupled with her passion for sustainability, led her into the aquaculture field. Candice has been involved in the aquaculture industry since 1994, culturing and conducting research on multiple species in North America. Her experience has included algae, shellfish (scallops, mussels, clams, oysters) and finfish (trout, cod, halibut, and Atlantic salmon). Having held managerial roles at hatcheries in the United States for almost 10 years, Candice returned to her home province of Newfoundland in 2006 and joined Memorial University. During her tenure with Memorial, she was involved with research and laboratory work that varied from heterotrophic bacteria, protists, and client-based R&D for the aquaculture industry. Since 2016, Candice’s focus has been on the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in Newfoundland and she has played a lead role in the Environmental Impact Statement as well as the construction and operations for the use of sterile Atlantic salmon in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Candice has extensive knowledge and expertise in aquaculture (land-based systems, sea cage systems, biosecurity, and animal welfare) as well as Federal and Provincial aquaculture policies and procedures.
